Project 2.

Site-Specific Soundwalk/ Mobile Sound Installation

SOUNDWALK: A soundwalk is a mobile, sound work with a focus on listening to the environment. Soundwalks are generally site-specific and may also include direct interaction with the space or environment they are tied to. The term was first used by members of the World Soundscape Project under the leadership of composer R. Murray Schafer in Vancouver in the 1970s.

REQUIREMENTS:

• For this project you will create a sight specific, soundwalk that either uses a stereo or binaural/ recording signal or combination or both.

• The walk must be anchored to chosen space or location.

• Please keep the walk within a reasonable distance to MICA. If indoors, please pay attention to COVID safety protocols.

• The walk can be indoors, outdoors or a combination of both.  The walk should be between 10 – 15 minutes.  If you want it to be longer, please talk to me.

• When the audio is completed, convert it to an mp3 file and share it with me via Google Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer or another Cloud sharing platform.

• I MUST receive your work no later than midnight Saturday October 2, 2021. Please encode the .mp3 file at 320kbps.

Getting Started:
• Decide on a starting and ending point for your piece. Be sure to visit the space first. Then walk and map it.

• Pay attention to the subtle nuances of the location. How can these be used in your work?

• If outdoors, use Google Maps to create a map of the starting and ending points for your piece. Please make sure I get a copy.

• Explore the location to discover elements that can be explored and taken advantage of in your work.

• Record, Record, Record.  You may check out the Zoom Recorders and Ambisonic recorder from me. Microphones and equipment may be used during class/studio time.

• The project can utilize pure sound, narrative/ spoken word, or a combination of both.
